Trinidad Carnival Had Me Outside: What Soca Brainwash Taught Me About Planning the Perfect Trip

February is that month where everybody claims they’re staying in the house… meanwhile Trinidad Carnival said, “Put on your cutest fit and come get your life.”

And listen…Carnival isn’t just a trip. It’s an experience schedule. If you don’t plan it right, you’ll spend half the time tired, confused, hungry, and texting your group chat “where y’all at?” like it’s a full-time job.

So let me put you on to how we did Trinidad Carnival…and why Soca Brainwash was the kind of fete that makes you forget you ever had responsibilities.

Trinidad Carnival hits different when you plan your trip around the experiences (fetes, food, culture, recovery time) instead of just “being there.”

1) Start with your “must-do” event, then build the trip around it

For us, one of the highlights was Soca Brainwash…a daytime, all-inclusive fete with a themed vibe that felt like Carnival meets luxury picnic meets “don’t play with me.”

What made it elite:

  • Theme on point (Valentine’s weekend energy, roses everywhere)

  • All-inclusive (food + alcohol + little trinkets/extra goodies) (especially the oxtail nachos)

  • Daytime (because partying before midnight is grown-woman excellence)

Soca Brainwash was one of those events where you show up cute, get treated good, and leave like, “Yeah… I see why people do Carnival every year.”

2) Pick a color/theme moment so your content (and memories) look intentional

At Soca Brainwash, there were different colors to choose from for the vibe. I chose blue, and the meaning? Unattainable.

And honestly… accurate. Because that day, I was booked, blessed, and emotionally unavailable to nonsense.

Planning tip: Choose 1–2 “signature looks” for the trip (one for a major fete, one for a cultural day). Your photos will look cohesive and you won’t pack your whole closet like you’re moving.

3) Balance the turn-up with culture and food (your body will thank you)

Carnival isn’t just fetes—Trinidad is a whole vibe. We made sure the trip included:

  • Local food moments (because we’re not eating sad airport snacks all week)

  • Scenic stops (views that make you pause and act like a soft-life commercial)

  • Beach time (the kind that resets your nervous system and your camera roll)

Planning tip: For every “party day,” schedule a “touch grass” moment: beach, scenic village, food tour, something slower.

4) Add recovery time on purpose (not by accident) I’m in my 40’s…I’m resting!

The difference between a good Carnival trip and a great Carnival trip is simple: rest is scheduled.

Because back-to-back events without a reset will have you looking at your outfit like, “Girl… I don’t even have the strength to put on earrings.”

Recovery must-haves:

  • Hydration packets

  • Sneakers in the bag (heels are cute, but so is walking)

  • A “quiet hour” before the next event

  • Something easy to eat before you start drinking

5) The real flex is having your itinerary organized

When your trip is mapped out…events, transportation plans, timing, and little notes…you move different. You’re not scrambling, you’re not guessing, you’re not stressed. You’re just… present.

That’s exactly why I travel the way I do: planned, cute, and with enough structure to still be spontaneous. We had a few unexpected stops to make but it still made the itinerary seam seamless.

Trinidad Carnival was a whole movie, and Soca Brainwash was one of those “bookmark this for next year” moments…theme, vibes, food, drinks, and daytime energy that still felt premium.

But the biggest takeaway? Carnival is better when you plan for experiences, not just location. Pick your must-do events, balance the turn-up with culture, schedule recovery, and keep your itinerary tight so you can actually enjoy the trip.

If you want to do Trinidad Carnival the right way (cute, safe, and not exhausted by Day 2), that’s exactly what we do in Tay’s Travel Club…because we don’t do struggle trips over here.

Our next carnival is St. Lucia 2027. Whaaat?! 2027?! Why not 2026?! Because carnival is pricey and I’d rather start saving for the event now! If you’re coming…then get ready! I’ll be posting the link soon!
