8 Ways To Stay Safe In Hotels During a Pandemic

Jan 18, 2021
So we’re in a pandemic and many are choosing to self-quarantine and not go out in the world unless necessary. People are going out for essential living only, ie. Groceries, work, school. There are others, like me, that are still traveling to make sure they stay sane! No matter the choice we must still take precautions on preventing catching and spreading COVID-19. Below are 8 quick ways to make sure your hotel during a vacation is safe.

  1. Check the hotel’s website so they can give you a summary of their COVID precautions. Some things are mandatory masks worn by employees, hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere you look, and less traffic of housekeeps in your room.
  2. Try to make reservations at a hotel that has keyless entry. My recent trip included a stay at a Hilton hotel. I was able to pick my room via the app and did not need a key card to open my room. My phone unlocked it for me.
  3. Try to choose a hotel with no carpet. There’s no true way to confirm housekeeping uses a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner.
  4. Besides using a mask in general, make sure you use it in common areas such as the lobby, hallways, etc.
  5. Limit usage of common areas. Of course, I’m not going on a trip and plan to work out. But some people do. Avoid the fitness center, spas, community hot tubs, or salons during high traffic times. Most hotels are limiting their capacity even more than before or now offering services or pool time by appointment.
  6. Elevators in general should not be shared with strangers. Only share them with your party/family. Still wear the masks while on it.
  7. Contactless is the way to go for any delivery service. Most hotels are providing room service so you can enjoy the hotel’s food delivered to you without any human interaction.
  8. Keep your Lysol and hand sanitizers on you always. While you may enter a seemingly clean room, it wouldn’t hurt to spray over surfaces with Lysol. Keep sanitizing those hands if you have to sign an agreement with a public pen or for touching elevator buttons.

All of these suggestions are great for popular chain hotels and are helpful to stop the spread of COVID when traveling and using a hotel. While many can be applied to Airbnb stays, each property uses different cleaning services (if they do). It will be hard to verify cleanliness and practices used by each individual company. Just trust but verify. What other ways are you staying safe from COVID during your travels?
